In 2023, Whittier College found itself in a highly public enrollment downturn—one that had been covered by the Los Angeles Times, Chronicle of Higher Education, and Inside Higher Ed, among many others.

Years of internal mistrust, pandemic fallout, and a series of strategic missteps had fractured campus morale and threatened Whittier’s long-term sustainability. The college had paused high-profile athletic programs, over-indexed on online offerings, and significantly reduced recruitment investments.

UMass Amherst & Solidan: A Success Story

These challenges posed significant obstacles to UMass Amherst’s ability to offer a smooth, streamlined, and user-friendly application experience. It also hindered administrative efficiency and data integrity, prompting a need for strategic intervention.

To address this need, UMass Amherst partnered with Solidan to implement a single application solution through Slate. This solution needed to align the application experience with the Slate-supported undergraduate and graduate processes that had already been established.

A Solidan Success Story: Illinois Central College (ICC)

In an effort to modernize and simplify its student application process, Illinois Central College (ICC)—a comprehensive community college in Illinois—embarked on a digital transformation project to replace its legacy system, TargetX, and streamline how prospective students apply and interact with the college.

ICC offers a diverse array of academic and workforce training programs. These include associate degree programs, dual enrollment opportunities for high school students, GED and ESL courses, non-credit classes, and the nation’s first prison education program. The goal was to implement a single, centralized application experience for all of these programs, using Slate as the new CRM platform.
